AVOD, SVOD and hybrid subscriptions
SVOD means subscription video on demand. AVOD is advertising-supported video on demand. A hybrid plan combines a subscription payment with advertising. FAST services typically offer free, linear-style streaming channels funded by ads.
Why platforms introduce an ad tier
A lower advertised entry price can appeal to budget-conscious users while advertisers pay for access to audiences. Whether it creates new revenue depends on the mix of new customers, existing customers switching plans, ad impressions and ad sales effectiveness.
How audience measurement changes the story
Nielsen reported that streaming captured 48.2% of ad-supported television viewing in Q2 2026. That result relates to ad-supported viewing; it should not be used as the share of all streaming or the advertising revenue share of platforms.
The viewer experience is part of the economics
High ad load may create short-term inventory but can weaken satisfaction. Frequency controls, relevant creative and sensible interruption points help advertisers and viewers, while measurement quality helps brands assess results.
Questions advertisers should ask
Clarify reach, incremental reach, completed views, identity and privacy practices, placement transparency and independent verification. Compare campaigns against a defined objective rather than a single impression metric.
